One of the main official reports on the basis of which the president of the United States, Donald Trump decided to impose import ‘reciprocal’ tough tariffs to many states of the world presents governmental policies, as well as the state of affairs in these countries, including Romania, says Profit.ro. In relation to Romania, the US specialists refers to problems in the pharma industry, intellectual property rights in IT, pirate websites allegedly hosted or registered in Romania and the trade deficit in goods. The document analysed by Profit.ro was made by Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), the state institution in Washington under the Executive Office of the President, which coordinates US foreign trade policy. In relation with Romania, the specialists identify problems connected to the pharma industry and the intellectual property rights in IT. Pharma manufacturers have identified several difficulties with the Romanian Government's failure to update, despite repeated requests, the list of innovative medicines eligible for reimbursement under the national health system, with numerous unresolved requests. In addition, both innovative pharmaceutical companies and generic companies have withdrawn medicines from the Romanian market, due to the fact that the official (regulated - editor's note) prices in Romania may fall below production costs," the report seen by Profit.ro reads. Another problem concerns some pirate websites, not specifically mentioned, which are believed to be hosted or registered in Romania. ″Mild penalties for infringements of intellectual property rights do not credibly deter these offences, so law enforcement agencies choose to treat significant cases as tax evasion cases,″ the paper says. The report also shows that, according to Washington statistics, the US merchandise trade deficit in goods with Romania last year was $2,646bn, down slightly from $2,691bn in 2023. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he signs ‘ a historic executive order which institutes reciprocal tariffs for the countries in the whole world’. These tariffs start from a minimum basis of ten percent. According to a table presented by the head of the White House, the reciprocal tariff imposed to the EU is 20 percent. Similarly, he reconfirmed that at midnight 25 per cent tariffs will take effect on all cars not made in the United States. The announcement caused an earthquake in international markets.
