Romanian Photovoltaic Industry Association supports investments in energy storage and grid digitalization

May 22, 2025

The Romanian Photovoltaic Industry Association (RPIA) underlines the need to support investments in storage capacity, transmission and distribution infrastructure, grid digitalization and electrification to ensure the balance and resilience of the National Energy System, especially in periods of low consumption.According to a press release of the organization, in the last three years, as a result of the European Green Deal and of the strategies to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports, the renewable energy sector in Romania has experienced significant growth. The photovoltaic industry, in particular, stood out as the fastest growing segment, reaching from 1.4 GW in 2021 to more than 5 GW in 2025, distributed approximately equally between prosumers' installations and large-scale power plants."In the context of the approaching Easter holidays, a period when, traditionally, economic activity slows down and energy demand drops significantly, especially in the industrial and commercial sectors, concerns have arisen in the public space about the possibility of interruptions in electricity supply caused by the overproduction of the renewable energy power plants," the source cited. The Romanian Photovoltaic Industry Association believes that the Ministry of Energy reacted proactively to these concerns by setting up an operational command center dedicated to overseeing and maintaining the balance in the National Energy System during the holidays. In collaboration with operators in the sector, a series of coordinated actions have been established in order to adapt production to the expected demand, such as reducing hydropower production, reducing the power of nuclear units by up to 40% and adjusting the operation of ELCEN power plants, while providing assurances that the electricity supply will not be affected. Moreover, Transelectrica, as Transmission and System Operator, has real-time monitoring and intervention tools and, together with the National Power Dispatcher, can effectively manage variations, as demonstrated during the Palm Sunday weekend this year."In less than three years, solar energy has become an essential component of the national mix, and the capacity of the system to integrate intermittent generation from renewable sources is continuously improving. Investments in storage technologies, modernization of transmission and distribution infrastructure, demand flexibility, electrification and increasing awareness of the functioning of an increasingly decentralized energy system remain priorities to consolidate this progress," the organization's press release reads.RPIA reiterates its openness for institutional dialogue and cooperation with all relevant stakeholders, as well as its commitment to support sustainable solutions in the energy transition in order to strengthen a sustainable and predictable framework.
