Works on Via Carpathia's expressway portions in Romania could start this autumn

May 28, 2025

Works on Via Carpathia's expressway sections in Romania could start this autumn, interim President Ilie Bolojan said on Tuesday. Bolojan held a news briefing at the end of a Three Seas Initiative Summit in Warsaw. He said that Via Carpathia is a network of highways and expressways connecting northern Europe from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea via Romania and to the Adriatic Sea via the Balkans."On the territory of our country the road is an expressway entering on the Debretin-Oradea route, descending to the south via Arad, Timisoara and then towards the Constanta area, towards Bulgaria - Calafat and towards Serbia, towards Belgrade and then towards the Balkan Peninsula. From my conversations yesterday with the National Corporation of Roads and Highways, by the end of this month, they will finalise part of the tenders that are currently under way on the three sections of the Arad - Oradea expressway, so that in May, at least the first section from Oradea to Salonta can be signed," said Bolojan. He added that two sections are at various stages of acquisition - one is under appeal, the one from Arad, and another is currently being analysed. Also at a tender stage is the section from Timisoara to Stamora Moravita of the expressway so that the connection to the Balkans may also be achieved, Bolojan added."If all goes well, in the summer of this year, towards autumn, these expressway sections of Via Carpathia in Romania could reach the execution phase. The Arad - Oradea expressway section is already being designed and carried out as the contract is to be signed, so the works could begin, and on the other section from Timisoara to Stamora Moravita the design period would follow and then, after a few months, very likely next year the execution could begin."Bolojan added that "an important connection that is overdue is the connection of the Port of Constanta both by road and rail in the North-West direction, for the connection in the direction of Central Europe, but also in the Northern direction, so that the great potential of this port to become a European hub in the Transcaucasian transport direction will be consolidated in the coming years".He also said that Romania's having joined the Schengen area and the war in Ukraine led to an increase in traffic through the Port of Constanta, which meant a strong boost for logistics and development in the south-eastern area of Romania.
