Ilie Bolojan: PSD and PNL have responsibility to correct things that have accumulated wrongly

June 5, 2025

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the National Liberal Party (PNL) "have the responsibility to correct the things that have accumulated wrongly" in the governments they have endorsed, interim president Ilie Bolojan declared on Tuesday."The current situation of Romania is certainly also given by the way in which the parties that have governed until now have managed our country. The PSD and the PNL have a main responsibility for this situation and it is normal, from my point of view, that they try to correct the things that have accumulated wrongly, considering both the parliamentary capacity they have and the difficulty of forming a majority", he said on Antena 1 TV station.Bolojan detailed the current situation in Romania."If we are honest with ourselves and with the Romanians, we must recognize that the main element of difficulty for our country at the moment is the budgetary crisis we find ourselves in. This budgetary crisis comes from past years, it comes from decisions that were taken - for example, pension or salary increases, investments that were adopted by previous governments - we have a difficulty related to financing this deficit, because we have to take loans and we have a major difficulty related to maintaining Romania's rating in such a way that we can continue to take loans, to be a trustworthy country in which to invest", said Bolojan. He also discussed the prospect of a prime minister after the presidential elections."Immediately after these elections, because we have time pressure, a parliamentary majority needs to be formed to support a prime minister. The problem is not that you want to occupy a position, regardless of who that person is, but that there is a majority that supports a certain format and unfortunately this majority is not very easy to form, because the Romanian Parliament is politically fragmented. No party has a share greater than 23% and we are in a situation where in order to practically form a stable majority - because only such a government can get Romania through this difficult period that will follow - it must be formed from three or four parties in such a way that you have a stable majority. This is an important condition", said Bolojan, who underlined the importance of the support that the president of Romania gives to a candidate for the position of prime minister. The interim president emphasized the assumption of responsibility, including by the party he led - PNL."I strongly agree that both I and the party I represented until this interim period - have the responsibility, because it also contributed to this unpleasant situation in which Romania is, not to desert this front of responsibility and to participate in these negotiations - and I agree that we assume all responsibility in order to be part of a governing formula that will provide a stable Government. Not only the prime minister is important, a strong team is important, so that each party sends the best people it has, who will each do the maximum possible in their field under the given conditions", said Ilie Bolojan.
