A recent nationwide poll conducted by IRSOP between May 10–13, 2025, reveals that Nicusor Dan is currently the leading candidate in Romania’s presidential race, showing a growing upward trend in support. The survey, which included 951 adult respondents across the country, indicates that Dan is likely to win if elections were held tomorrow. According to the poll, among likely voters—estimated to represent over 60% of the electorate—52% would vote for Nicusor Dan, while 48% support George Simion, leader of the nationalist AUR party. This margin, though narrow, reflects Dan’s steady momentum as the campaign intensifies. When asked about preferred leadership pairings, 51% of respondents said they would favor a tandem of Nicusor Dan as President and Ilie Bolojan as Prime Minister, compared to 42% who support George Simion alongside C?lin Georgescu. A small portion (7%) expressed indecision or disapproval of both options. The survey also measured public perceptions of the two candidates on several key governance issues: 59% believe Dan would collaborate more constructively with Parliament, compared to 25% for Simion. 54% say Dan would strengthen Romania’s ties with NATO and the EU, while only 31% believe Simion would do so. 52% expect Dan to increase Western trust in Romania, versus 37% for Simion. A plurality also believe Dan is more capable of managing the economic crisis (47%) and prioritizing anti-corruption policies (47%). Conversely, 61% believe George Simion would seek closer ties with Russia, compared to just 12% for Dan. The poll was conducted via telephone interviews with 951 adults aged 18 and over. The sampling margin of error is ±3.2% at a 95% confidence level. IRSOP, an independent research institute founded in 1990, fully funded the study. As the presidential race heats up, the IRSOP findings underscore a key divide in voter preferences between a pro-European, reformist vision represented by Nicusor Dan, and a nationalist, anti-establishment platform led by George Simion.
