CCR debates on Thursday Simion's request for the cancellation of the elections; the complaint is not filed in original

June 19, 2025

The Constitutional Court (CCR) has announced that it will debate on Thursday morning AUR leader George Simion's request for the cancellation of the presidential elections won by Nicusor Dan.In a press release sent on Wednesday, CCR mentions the fact that they received a document, scanned format, signed in holograph in copy by George Simion, but in order to be debated, the document must be signed in original. In the application sent to the CCR, George Simion asks the judges to find that 'the electoral process for the election of Romania's president in 2025 was marred by multiple irregularities and violations of electoral law, which had a convergent effect of disregarding the essential principles of democratic elections'. The AUR leader says, that, in the period covered between the day of the vote in the first round and the starting date for the electoral campaign for the second round,’an operation of disinformation of the electorate and denigration’ for him, which took place even on the day of elections. He states that there were foreign interventions in the development of the electoral process in Romania which had the purpose to make acts of electoral fraud and ‘contributed to the propagation of disinformation’, through artificial promotion of some fake scenarios.'Thus, as regards foreign interventions in the electoral process in Romania (foreign state entities), I give you, by way of example, the French, Polish, Moldovan and Spanish interventions. As regards the French intervention, while claiming the undermining of resilience and subjection to manipulation by 'foreign international interference', Emmanuel Macron indirectly showed his support for Nicusor-Daniel Dan, pointing out that the elections of 18 May 2025 are extremely important for Romania's European course', explains the AUR leader. George Simion also invokes the founder of the messaging app Telegram, Pavel Durov, who allegedly refused a request from a Western country, which he did not name, to 'silence' conservative voices in Romania. The AUR leader is asking the CCR judges to hear Pavel Durov by videoconference. The president of AUR also claims that Nicusor Dan benefited from an 'aggressive' campaign run on voting day, with more than 15 songs promoting him being uploaded on the TikTok platform, songs that were taken over by hundreds of inauthentic users and for which the BEC issued five decisions on the removal of illegal content.   At the same time, George Simion accuses that the electoral process was also flawed by the interference of national security institutions, which, 'being directly involved in the electoral process, took advantage of their key position and manipulated voters' choices in an abusive manner'.
