Cars: ACAROM: Turnover in Romanian automotive industry has increased almost tenfold in 20 years

June 1, 2025

The turnover in the Romanian automotive industry has increased almost tenfold in 20 years, from 3.8 billion euros in 2005 to 35 billion euros currently, said Adrian Sandu, secretary general of the Romanian Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACAROM), at a specialized conference on Monday."In the Romanian automotive industry, we increased our turnover from 3.8 billion euros in 2005 to about 35 billion euros, almost ten times in 20 years. As for the production of motor vehicles, in '89, about 144,000 vehicles were produced. Last year, 560,000 vehicles were produced in Romania. Exports in '89 were almost non-existent. Only about 4,000-5,000 to 10,000 Dacia cars arrived through China, Brazil or North Africa. Now, 92% of motor vehicle production is exported. And I haven't mentioned the export of auto components. There is no car manufactured in Europe that does not have at least one component manufactured in Romania," said the secretary general of ACAROM.He also stated that the target for 2035 is for Romania to have 100% new vehicles on the market, with zero carbon emissions, which means that the automotive industry is heading towards a major transformation. "But the other actors must also contribute to this transformation, they must support and they must keep up. And here I refer to the European and national authorities, to the energy companies," explained Adrian Sandu. He believes that for the development of the automotive industry in Romania and industry in general, jobs and the investment climate must not be affected, "so as to give investors confidence that Romania can do even better in the future." The ACAROM representative also said that, at the same time, as many investments as possible must be attracted to increase Romania's competitiveness.Ziarul Financiar organized, on Monday, a new conference dedicated to the reindustrialization of Romania, with the title: "What else do we produce in the country?"
