Survey: Four out of five Romanians consider payment security essential when shopping online

June 30, 2025

For 79% of Romanian consumers, security is the most important aspect related to payments when shopping online, and 90% of them would choose another payment method if it were more secure, shows the latest Visa study on e-commerce payments in Central and Eastern Europe (2025).According to a press release from the company, the fact that they are willing to try new payment solutions shows how important it is for Romanian consumers to be able to choose their preferred payment method, especially if they can also benefit from a higher degree of security.Consumers, including those in Romania, now expect, more than ever, simplified and hassle-free shopping experiences. The Visa study shows that almost two-thirds (65%) of shoppers complete an online payment in less than 30 seconds, and over half of Romanian consumers (55%) would abandon their online shopping cart if they could not use their preferred payment method. At the same time, 1 in 7 European consumers (14%) abandon their purchases when they have to manually enter their card details. In fact, the availability of the preferred payment method is essential for more than 9 out of 10 respondents in almost all Central and Eastern European markets. Therefore, merchants are forced to simplify the checkout process. To remain competitive, they must provide consumers with a wide range of payment options that offer both convenience and freedom of choice."As digital payments evolve, Romanian consumers' interest in innovation is growing, with 3 out of 4 ready to experiment with new payment methods. In this dynamic environment, security and convenience are of crucial importance. When the success or failure of a sale depends on every second spent in the checkout process, secure payment solutions like Visa Click to Pay, based on tokenization, represent a major competitive advantage. Tokenization successfully solves both problems at the same time. By replacing sensitive card data with a unique, encrypted code, we reduce the risk of fraud and simplify the payment experience. For merchants, this means higher conversion rates and fewer abandoned purchases. For shoppers, it provides the confidence to complete purchases without hesitation. Our mission is to make secure payments "to be very simple, so that completing the order becomes an invisible step, not an obstacle, with every online purchase," said Elena Ungureanu, Visa Country Manager in Romania, quoted in the press release.Visa Click to Pay is an innovative global standard for online payments, which streamlines e-commerce by eliminating manual card data entry, ensuring a high level of security and improving the overall shopping experience.Click to Pay works efficiently across all card systems, devices and browsers, as long as the merchant from which the purchase is made accepts Visa solutions.Visa is a digital payments company, facilitating payment transactions between consumers, merchants, financial institutions and government entities in over 200 countries.
