President Dan invites Thursday parliamentary parties to consultations on appointing PM

July 16, 2025

President Nicusor Dan invited, for Thursday, to the Cotroceni Palace, the presidents of the political parties and formations represented in Parliament for consultations regarding the designation of the candidate for the position of prime minister, the Presidential Administration informed. The consultations will take place according to the following schedule:* 11:00 - Social Democratic Party (PSD);* 11:30 - Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR);* 12:00 - National Liberal Party (PNL);* 12:30 - Save Romania Union (USR);* 13:00 - S.O.S. Romania Party (SOS);* 13:30 - Young People's Party (POT);* 14:00 - Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR);* 14:30 - Parliamentary Group of National Minorities.   Ilie Bolojan is the leading candidate to be nominated as prime minister. Coalition parties have also agreed on the possibility of a rotating premiership, according to Digi24 sources.   Sources cited by Digi24 and News.ro indicate that PSD wants seven ministries in the future Cabinet, including Transport and Justice. PNL would hold four portfolios, aiming for Finance, Internal Affairs, and Regional Development. USR is expected to receive three ministries, and UDMR two.   PSD would agree to Bolojan as prime minister only if it regains control of the position in two years. However, the liberal leader reportedly does not want a fixed deadline for the rotation. Sources also state that Bolojan has secured veto power over the composition of the new government.   However, according to Hotnews.ro sources from within the four parties, PSD, PNL, USR, UDMR and National Minorities, they have reached an agreement for a government newspaper.   An informal National Political Council of PSD has been held to decide the party’s mandate for Thursday’s consultations at Cotroceni Palace, but the PSD leaders discussed for an hour and a half on Tuesday evening whether they would be part of the future government, without making a final decision. PSD will call an internal referendum after Thursday’s consultations at Cotroceni, and only then will PSD members determine whether to enter the government
