Natural gas production down 1.4% in first four months of 2025; imports up 72.5%

Romania's usable natural gas production in the first four months of 2025 was over 2.532 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), 36,800 toe less than in the same period last year (down 1.4%), according to data centralised by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).On the other hand, in the January-April 2025 period, natural gas imports increased by 72.5% (an additional 358,000 toe) compared to the same period the previous year, reaching 851,700 tonnes of oil equivalent.According to estimates from the National Commission for Strategy and Forecasting (CNSP), natural gas production is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 1.7% until 2027. Thus, in the latest Energy Balance Forecast, for 2025 a natural gas production of 7.79 million toe is estimated (up 1.5%), for 2026 - 7.907 million toe (up 1.5%), and for 2027 - a production of 8.176 million toe (up 3.4%).As for imports, a downward trend is expected, with a more significant decrease by 2027 (down 6%), in line with the increase in domestic production, as new production capacities come online, while also maintaining transit to external markets.CNSP estimates for 2025 imports of 2.211 million toe (down 7.6%), for 2026 - 2.150 million toe (down 2.7%), and for 2027 - 2.022 million toe (down 6%).
