Premier nomination postponed

July 17, 2025

On Thursday, president Nicusor Dan had new consultations with parliamentary parties about the future government. PSD said, after talks, that by the end of the day there would be an assumed package of fiscal measures, while USR said it was ready to “fight” next to premier Ilie Bolojan. Later on, Nicusor Dan and Ilie Bolojan met on Thursday night, at Cotroceni, but did not reach an understanding about tax rises, sources from the Presidential Administration declared for HotNews.ro. Political sources say that Bolojan had insisted on VAT increases and conditioned the take over of the prime minister position on the application of that measure.   Talks between Nicusor Dan and Ilie Bolojan began at 4.00 p.m. and the PNL leader asked for a VAT increase from 19% to 21% in the ruling program, since it was, in his opinion, the only solution meant to rapidly increase budget incomes. Moreover, according to political sources quoted by TV news, Bolojan told the president that he refused to become premier if the head of state did not accept the 21% VAT rise. But the president opposed that solution and said he had made a promise during the election campaign and would not infringe it.   The premier nomination was postponed for the following days. The variant of technocrat premier was brought to the fore by Dan and Bolojan at their meeting on Thursday night.   Althought initially new talks among PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR party presidents with Nicusor Dan had been scheduled for Thursday, 9.00 p.m., the meeting was cancelled following the failure of negotiations between president Dan and Ilie Bolojan, according to sources from a party attending the negotiations.
