Tanczos: The most important thing in the last 6 months, regaining confidence in Romanian gov't, economy

June 29, 2025

The most important thing in the last six months has been the regaining of confidence in the Romanian government and in Romania's economy internationally and domestically, Tanczos Barna - deputy Prime Minister and former finance minister - said on Tuesday."The most important thing in the last six months has been the regaining of confidence in the Romanian government and in the Romanian economy internationally and internally. That was also reflected in the downward trend of interest rates in February-March-April. We have certainly also been affected by external shocks, including, for example, the war over tariffs between the US and the European Union. At the same time, the wars that are taking place, unfortunately very close to our borders or at a relative closeness, continue to affect us. The regaining of confidence was also reflected in the country's ratings during the spring and early spring. This must continue; we must come up with a package of measures with which we can keep this trajectory, even if we are on a negative outlook, not to reach a downgrade in any case. This can be avoided with a package of measures to increase revenues and to reduce the costs of functioning of the Romanian state," said Tanczos Barna, after the handover of the finance ministerial portfolio. He added that, at the same time, the budgetary balance must be maintained."I cannot conceive that, in such a situation, the ministries would not reform, not reduce the operating expenses and not cancel privileges. These are the most important measures to be taken in the near future. We were in a more complicated period, ok, it was an electoral campaign, we had presidential elections, we were very close to a political disaster, we escaped disaster, we are pro-European parties in this coalition and we must go ahead with this package of measures to stabilise the budget on the revenue side and to reduce expenses. And the third very important element, this package must be thought of in such a way as to keep this minimum economic growth that we are still seeing now."He added that, despite the international turbulences, Romania's economy is slightly growing, stable, robust, highly performing and the economy must be backed so that it can get through.
