Ukrainian ambassador on importance of Orthodox Church of Ukraine's full recognition by Romanian Orthodox Church

July 24, 2025

Ukrainian ambassador in Bucharest Ihor Prokopchuk underscored on Thursday at a press conference the special importance of the issue of the full recognition of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine by the Romanian Orthodox Church, noting that this would "strengthen relations and trust between the peoples of our countries."The diplomat referred to the conflict that ensued on June 17 in Chernivtsi, when several people were injured in the brawl that broke out between representatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the newly created religious structure, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), supported by the authorities in Kiev.Prokopchuk said that "our interest is for this process to end as soon as possible" and that its completion would represent "a weighty contribution to relations and trust between the two peoples.""There are no interethnic motives in this conflict that arose between two religious organizations (...) - the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church which has historically been tied to Moscow", the ambassador added, specifying that many people in the area do not want to be associated with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church because of the war triggered by Russia. The diplomat argued that Russia has every interest "to create a situation that is presented or perceived as an interethnic conflict" because "it would increase the distrust between Romania and Ukraine."He indicated that the authorities will continue to take action to make sure that disputes in the area are resolved peacefully.
