Romanian capital recognized by global index provider MSCI as Advanced Frontier Market

July 28, 2025

The Romanian capital market has been recognized by the global index provider MSCI as an Advanced Frontier Market, a milestone towards achieving Emerging Market status, the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) announced on last Wednesday. This classification is a new step forward towards achieving Emerging Market status from MSCI as well, which represents one of the main objectives of the Bucharest Stock Exchange and would bring substantial capital inflows to listed Romanian companies and, implicitly, to the national economy."With the recognition by MSCI of the Romanian capital market as an Advanced Frontier Market, important steps are being taken towards obtaining the Emerging Market status for Romania from the global index provider MSCI. At the same time, the Romanian capital market thus receives international reconfirmation of its potential, which makes us very happy, especially in the context in which, this year, the Bucharest Stock Exchange celebrates 30 years of existence, a period in which BVB, together with all its stakeholders, has worked intensively to align the Romanian stock exchange to the highest standards. I am convinced that, together, we will succeed in the near future in fulfilling the other necessary criteria to obtain the Emerging Market status from MSCI as well," Radu Hanga, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bucharest Stock Exchange, said in a post on the BVB's Facebook account. In turn, the general manager of BVB, Adrian Tanase, said that he is confident in the chances that the Romanian capital market has in order to meet the quantitative MSCI criteria necessary for this promotion."The recognition received now from MSCI is a reference point that brings us closer to achieving the objective of obtaining the Emerging Market status for Romania from MSCI. I am confident in the chances that our capital market has to also meet the quantitative MSCI criteria necessary for this promotion, which would bring benefits not only to the capital market, but also to Romania", Adrian Tanase said.BVB representatives also conveyed that the joint efforts, including those of all partners involved in the capital market, are reflected in this recognition. "We are eager to take the Romanian stock exchange to the next level," the BVB post also reads.
