Tourism: Trenches Trail, first tourist trail with historical theme, set up in mountainous area of Gorj County

August 6, 2025

Trenches Trail, the first tourist trail with a historical theme, was set up in the mountainous area of Gorj county last weekend, the head of the Romanian Mountain Rescue Service, Sabin Cornoiu, said on Monday.According to him, Gorj's mountain rescuers, together with a group of mountain lovers, set up a mountain trail designed to highlight and include elements of historical interest, the memorabilia of the battles fought by the Romanian Army in the First World War, "The Great War - The War of the Reintegration of the Nation" in the tourist circuit, besides the beauty of the mountainous area of the Valcan massif. The route starts from the village of Balta, Runcu commune, goes up the Baltii valley and reaches the Arcanu peak where there are still well preserved and well-defined trenches of the Romanian Army used in the first period of the battles in this massif. Moreover, after careful research of the period maps and documents describing the distribution in the troops of the combatant sides, it was discovered that the soldiers of the 16th company of the 4th Battalion of the 18th Infantry Regiment of Gorj, a company led, in the first period of the battles in the massif and in Hunedoara county, by Gheorghe Tatarascu, former Prime Minister of Romania fought in the trenches of the Arcanu peak. The trail was marked with indicator arrows, and in one of the most visible and well-preserved sectors of the trench line were placed two descriptive panels with information about the battles in this area, the location of the troops, life in the trenches, reproductions of photographs and period maps and information about Gheorghe Tatarascu. In a national premiere, the marking pillars, besides reflective and photoluminescent elements, were also equipped with solar-powered lamps, so as to ensure good orientation at night."This first action is part of a larger project, an ambitious project, which we have conceived to emphasize part of the historical past of Gorj, we will continue with the development of another thematic trail to the trenches of the Parang massif in the area of Crasna - Musetesti, then with the setting up of permanent museum points with pieces from the First World War discovered in the trenches and in the areas where the fighting took place, as well as with the finalization and launch of a film made in the very trench in the Secului hill at Marasesti where Ecaterina Teodoroiu died, discovered in a research campaign organized at the end of last year,", said Sabin Cornoiu. The Gorj County Council, the Runcu Town Hall, the County Museum of History Alexandru Stefulescu, Zentiva, the Association of History Prospectors of Comanesti, associations of historical re-enactments, historical research enthusiasts, specialists in the field of cinema, the Gorj mountain rescue service and many volunteers have also shown their willingness to support the project with human, material and financial resources, the cited source also mentioned.  (Photo:https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=735053818917613&set=pcb.735054102250918&locale=ro_RO)
