Gov't gives firm assurances Romania will stay away from war

July 31, 2025

Romania will not go to war and there is no reason for panic or alarm regarding the country's possible involvement in a military conflict, the government said on Tuesday in response to fake information circulated in the public space, which features Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan speaking about Romania's alleged involvement in an armed conflict, which misleads public opinion."The Romanian state's decision is firm: Romania will not enter war. Romania is a safe country, a full member of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO), benefiting from solid security guarantees that ensure the protection of its territory and citizens. There is no reason for panic or alarm regarding Romania's possible engagement in a military conflict. The state institutions are working within the normal parameters, and the social and economic life of the Romanian citizens and companies carries on under completely safe conditions," the government stated. The Executive also calls on all citizens to seek information from official and verified sources."The spread of false information can generate unjustified panic and can seriously affect the climate of public trust. For correct and updated information, please consult the official websites and channels of the Romanian state institutions," the government advises.   The Ministry of Interior (MAI) reported the existence of a campaign spreading false information, through which videos created using artificial intelligence programmes are presented as genuine, which show prime minister Ilie Bolojan announcing Romania's entry into war as of September 2025."These videos are fake and are part of a deliberate attempt to manipulate the public opinion. Romania's PM has not made such statements, and Romania is not entering the war," the MAI press office informs on Tuesday."We encourage you to check your sources and not to distribute unverified content," according to a MAI Facebook post, which mentioned that "this information is part of the MAI's measures in order to identify and combat disinformation campaigns which affect the confidence in the state's institutions and in the people who do their duty seriously."
