Romania welcomes Zelensky's invitation to the White House

August 17, 2025

Foreign Minister Oana Toiu sent her first official message from Bucharest after the summit held on August 15 in Alaska between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. The Foreign Minister said that the meeting represented "a first step towards unblocking negotiations" and welcomed President Zelensky's invitation for a visit to the White House, scheduled for Monday, cotidianul.md reads.   "The Alaska dialogue was a first step towards unblocking negotiations and we welcome President Trump's invitation for a meeting with President Zelensky in Washington," said Oana Toiu.   The Foreign Minister stressed that new developments in the international dialogue on peace in Ukraine are positive and that the involvement of the United States, together with European actions, can be decisive in achieving and maintaining peace.   "We remain convinced that through transatlantic unity and European solidarity we can rebuild together a future in which lasting peace and security are the basis of prosperity in the region. Romania is and will continue to be an active part of this common effort for peace and economic growth. The stability and security of the Black Sea region are essential", added the head of Romanian diplomacy.   Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Saturday that Kiev supports the organization of a trilateral meeting, Ukraine - USA - Russia, and that it will go to Washington on Monday, at Trump's invitation, "to discuss all the details regarding the cessation of the killings and the war." The invitation to meet with the US leader came during a phone call he had with the US president after the Alaska summit. In a message on Truth Social, Trump conditioned the organization of a new meeting with Putin on how the meeting with the Ukrainian leader would proceed. The US president stated that, following the discussions, including with Zelensky and European leaders, the only way to stop the war is a peace agreement, not a ceasefire.
