Lidl contributed EUR 2.31 billion to Romania’s economy in 2024

In addition to the amount generated in the economy, Lidl’s activity in Romania supports 90,000 jobs.  Moreover, the retailer invested 160 million euros in 2024, i.e. 2.79% of the total foreign investments made in our country last year. The information is part of the balance sheet of the socio-economic impact of Lidl’s activity in Romania for 2024, following an analysis carried out by KPMG.   Thus, Lidl companies in Romania in 2024: contributed in total (direct, indirect and induced) EUR 2.31 billion to the gross value added (GVA), equivalent to 0.65% of the country’s GDP. each job in Lidl indirectly supports the activity of about 6 other jobs in the economy. That is, the salaries of the Lidl team and the collaboration with local suppliers contribute to maintaining almost 90,000 jobs nationwide, the equivalent of over 1.6% of the total employees in Romania. the value of Lidl’s investments in Romania amounted to approximately 160 million euros, representing 2.79% of the total foreign direct investments in the country in the same year. the company’s direct contribution to the state budget, through taxes paid, amounted to EUR 765 million, equivalent to about 0.24% of Romania’s gross value added (GVA). collaborated with over 450 local producers for the assortment of products in stores and, in total, with over 2,200 suppliers of goods and services in Romania. The company’s expenses with Romanian suppliers exceeded 2.16 billion euros. the value of exports made by local suppliers through Lidl Romania amounted to approximately 60 million euros, in countries such as Germany, Poland, Hungary, Serbia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Cyprus, Bulgaria.   “Every year, Lidl strengthens its commitment to invest in Romania. Since our entry into the market and until the end of 2024, we have invested approximately EUR 2.6 billion in Romania. It is an investment with a major economic impact, equivalent to over 4.5 million net minimum wages in the economy (current). At the same time, our contribution to the development of civil society is also impactful. Since our entry into the market, we have donated approximately EUR 48 million to long-term programs carried out by NGOs, which have a positive impact and respond to the most urgent needs of the Romanian society: health, education, environmental protection and community development. We remain consistent and will continue to invest in Romania with the same efficiency, yield and competitiveness, as we have been doing since we entered the market, contributing significantly to the national economy, an impact that is not only measured in numbers, but in more prosperous communities,” said Jose Alberto Chueca Val, CEO of Lidl Romania.   Lidl maintains its position in the top of the largest companies in Romania: in 2024, the retailer reported a consolidated turnover of over RON 24.6 billion (EUR 4.9 billion), up 9% compared to the previous year, being the largest player in Romanian food retail by turnover.
