EnergMin Ivan rejects rumors that Romania is selling electricity to the Republic of Moldova at half price

October 2, 2025

Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan rejected on Thursday the "fake news" according to which Romania is providing electricity to the Republic of Moldova for free or at half price."I want to make a plain clarification regarding some fake news which I have seen in the last period, according to which Romania provides free energy to the Republic of Moldova and so on. I have requested the data on the SPOT market. Today, all the energy traded in Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, Moldova, Ukraine, Hungary is done on the stock exchange. Depending on the price at certain hourly intervals, it is bought and sold. And to give you a very clear example, in order to finally put this myth to rest, in July, on average, Romania imported electricity at 104 euros per megawatt and sold it at 127 euros, meaning it sold at a higher price than it imported. In August, it imported at an average of 78 euros per megawatt and exported, meaning sold, at 115 euros per megawatt, so it sold at a higher price than it bought from the Republic of Moldova," the minister told a news conference at the Government. He explained that the price of electricity in the Republic of Moldova is low because the Government has a subsidy mechanism and because it eliminated the VAT on electricity."And I want to put an end once and for all to this myth and these lies spreading online, especially those according to which Romania uses part of its strategic advantages to sell electricity at half price to a neighboring country, a friendly country, a country with many friends, extremely important to us, which we value, but that's one thing, and another is another," Bogdan Ivan argued.  (Photo:https://gov.ro/)
