The AUR MPs lodged on Wednesday, the simple motion against minister of environment, Diana Buzoianu with the title ‘ The Weakening of energy security of Romania through environment policis which blocked the functioning of hydropower plants started before 1989’ announced in the plenary of the Deputies’ Chamber, deputy Valeriu Munteanu.'Romania has become a net importer of electricity in 2025 with a deficit of around 2.4 TWh-hours in the first semester alone and some of the highest spot prices among the highest in the European Union. This vulnerability directly affects citizens' bills and economic competitiveness, and the increase in VAT from 19% to 21% in August this year has only deepened the problems. At the same time, the completion of hydropower plants before 1989, works already more than 75% completed and declared projects of major public interest by Emergency Ordinance 175/2022, is being blocked by the Environment Ministry, which is delaying the permits and sending public messages of discouragement. The recent statements of the Minister of the Environment, USR representative, Ms. Diana Buzoianu, according to which 'the four hydropower plants of the communist period can be replaced by photovoltaic parks eight times cheaper', ignore the role of hydropower in energy security, which provides balance, durability, resilience to weather conditions, protection against floods,' said the AUR MP.
