Romania changes gradually its migration profile: for the third year in a row, the number of those who come into the country is larger than that of those who leave. Between 2022-2024 Romania recorded almost 200,000 inhabitants more due to migration, shows the Social Monitor, a project of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, on the basis of official data. The most recent data published by the National Institute of Statistics confirm that Romania is no longer predominantly a source country of emigration, but predominantly of immigration: in 2024, for the third year in a row, more people settled in Romania for a period longer than 12 months than emigrated. The migration balance was 97114 persons in 2022, +66065 persons in 2023, +36200 persons in 2024. It must be said, when talking about immigrants, we do not refer exclusively to foreign citizens. Thus, in 2025, the most recent data published by Eurostat showed that approximately two thirds (217.5 thousands) of the 324 thousand long duration immigrants were Romanian citizens coming back to the country. Out of the 106.5 thousand immigrants with foreign citizenship, the most numerous were from Nepal (18,042), Sri Lanka (14,316), Turkiye (9,366), India (7,830) the Republic of Moldova (5, 742), Bangladesh (4,982). Similarly, data on emigrants from Romania do not only include Romanian citizens. Thus, in 2023, 239 thousand emigrants from Romania are registered. Of these, only 150 thousand (63%) had Romanian citizenship. Significant contingents of emigrants from Romania had Nepalese (11,417), Turkish (10,698), Sri Lankan (8,123), Moldovan (7,738), Indian (5,474) citizenship.
