President Nicusor Dan, at European Political Community meeting; discussions on Ukraine and European security

October 30, 2025

President Nicusor Dan is participating, on Thursday, in the seventh meeting of the European Political Community, which is taking place in Copenhagen, Kingdom of Denmark, according to the Presidential Administration.Nicusor Dan was present the day before at the informal meeting of the European Council.According to the cited source, the agenda includes the conflict in Ukraine and ensuring European security. On Thursday, within the European Political Community, Nicusor Dan will participate in the roundtable on the security situation in Europe and aspects related to resilience. The head of state is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings. On Wednesday, in Copenhagen, the leaders of the European Union states took part in an informal European Council, to discuss how to strengthen Europe's common defense, as well as support for Ukraine, according to a statement published on the website consilium.europa.eu. The informal meeting in the Danish capital was chaired by the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and hosted by the Head of the Danish Government, Mette Frederiksen.   President Nicusor Dan said on Tuesday, in relation to the agenda of the informal European Council summit taking place in Copenhagen on Wednesday, that Romania is interested in ensuring continued strong support for Ukraine and, operationally, in having the eastern flank properly reinforced.'This summit is more of a vision-setting summit, rather than a technical one. What is important, especially after the drone incident in Poland, are the technical-level discussions that have taken place between defence ministers and the chiefs of staff of the armed forces. Those are the substantive elements that will lead into a political decision that is already, in a way, agreed upon both within the structures of the European Union and NATO. What I anticipate will be discussed tomorrow are, once again, issues related to the war in Ukraine and the pace at which Western countries can continue to provide support to Ukraine, but this will be discussed at a political level, not at the more important technical level, as I mentioned. And Romania, of course, has an interest in seeing support for Ukraine remain consistent, and in having the eastern flank operationally well reinforced,' President Nicusor Dan told Euronews on Tuesday evening. The European Union is determined to decisively enhance its defence preparedness by 2030 and has taken swift steps in recent months to meet this goal. These include measures to bolster its defence capabilities, stimulate defence funding, develop its industrial base, and create opportunities for joint procurement, all in full coherence with NATO.The discussions serve as guidance for the European Commission and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs in drafting their roadmap for the next steps in implementing the EU's defence preparedness objectives. This roadmap will be presented and debated at the European Council meeting on 23-24 October. Previously, Nicusor Dan, declared on Tuesday in Timisoara, that Romania has a geographical advantage to participate in th reconstruction of Ukraine, but there “are many things to be done”and an “xray of companies” that can be included is needed. Present at the conference “Europe at crossroads- Security, Proseperity and Our Common Future”, held in Timisoara, which included a series of questions for icusor Dan, the president was asked how prepared was Romania to become an important actor in the reconstruction of Ukraine.   “We are very prepared from the geographical perspective”, said the president, while laughter was heard in the audience. He added that Romania has advantages, such as Constanta Port, the Danube and “logistic paths have been created during the war,” both in the humanitarian and military domains.   “Beyond that, I think we still have work to do, here, to have an xray of companies which can really participate ( to the reconstruction). Of course, there is an administrative, social, post-conflict security wager, but the most important is the economic one and here we have work to do,”said Nicusor Dan.  (Photo:https://www.presidency.ro/)
