Romania, along with 16 other EU countries, calls for sanctions against migrant smugglers

  A number of 17 European countries, among which Romania as well as two states outside the European Union, Andorra and the United Kingdom signed on Thursday a joint statement where they support the approach of ‘innovative solutions’ to fight against the illegal immigration, among which there are ‘ sanctions regimes’ against the traffikers groups, says EFE on Friday.The text was drafted during the European Political Community (EPC) summit in Copenhagen, which brought together representatives from 47 countries, both from the EU club and neighboring countries, in the presence of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. This statement was signed by the representatives of Andorra, Austria, Belgium,Bulgaria, Cyprus, Cezhia, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden and the UK.The document pleads for ‘ more firm measures against traffikers’ through a better management of foreign borders and collaboration ‘ in new ways to combat the traffikers gangs, such as following the sanctions regimes’.Moreover, the statement supports the implementation of European Convention of Human Rights and the Convention regarding Refugees ‘ in a way which should protect against abuse and allow governments to face modern challenges’.In order to increase the repatriation of immigrants deemed illegal, the signatories plan to 'form new and innovative alliances, including with third countries, to speed up processing and ease internal pressures', as well as to use tools such as diplomacy and visa facilitation. Similarly, the document promotes ‘ collaboration with the countries of origin and with those on the trasit routes’ to stimulate development, creation of workplaces, education and voluntary repatriation ‘ to manage alliances mutually advantageous’.
