Eurostat: Romania saw sharpest decline in EU retail sales in August

The retail sales increased slightly in the euro zone and were stable in the European Union in August, but Romania had the strongest drop of retail sales in the community block, show the data published on Monday by Eurostat.According to the European office, retail sales increased by 0.1% in the euro area and remained stable in the European Union in August 2025 compared with July 2025. However, the member countries with the largest decreases in retail sales were Romania (minus 4%), Poland (minus 0.8%), Luxembourg and Portugal (minus 0.7%). Retail sales also grew by 1% year-on-year in the euro area and by 1.1% in the European Union. Again, Romania had the biggest decline in retail sales in the EU, with a fall of 3.8%. According to data previously published by the NSI, the volume of turnover in retail trade (excluding trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles), gross series, in August 2025, compared to the previous month, decreased by 7.2% overall, as a result of decreases in retail trade of motor fuels in specialized stores (-11.7%), sales of non-food products (-8.0%) and sales of food, beverages and tobacco (-3.3%). Turnover in retail trade (excluding trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles), working-day and seasonally adjusted series, decreased overall in August 2025 compared with the previous month by 4%, as a result of decreases in sales of food, beverages and tobacco (-3.4%), sales of non-food (-3.1%) and retail trade of motor fuels in specialized stores (-2.9%). Similarly, the volume of the turnover in retail (with the exception of trade with vehicles and motocycls), gross series. In August 2025, as compared to August 2024 there was a drop, on the whole by 4% as a result of the decline registered for food sales, beverages and tobacco (-6%), non-food sales (-3.2%) and retail trade of motor fuesl in specialized stores (-2.3%).   Turnover in retail trade (excluding trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles), working-day and seasonally adjusted, year-on-year, fell by 2.1% overall, as a result of decreases in sales of food, drinks and tobacco (-4.4%) and non-food (-0.4%). Retail trade of fuels for motor vehicles in specialized stores increased by 5.9%.
