Average monthly income stands at 9,502 lei per household in Q2 2025, expenses at 8,042 lei

The total monthly average income stood at 9,502 lei per household, in nominal terms, accounting for 3,824 lei per person in Q2 2025, and the total monthly average expenditure of the population was, in nominal terms 8,042 lei per household (3237 lei per person) and accounted for 84.6% of the total income, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data published on Tuesday.Compared to Q2 of the previous year, the total monthly average income per household increased by 15.7% and the total monthly average income per person increased by 16.8%, while the total monthly average expenditure per household increased by 16.2% and the total monthly average expenditure per person increased by 17.3%.According to the INS, the monthly average monetary income in Q2 2025 stood at 8,928 lei per household (3,593 lei per person), increasing by 4.1% compared to Q1 2025, while the in-kind income was 574 lei monthly per household (231 lei per person), increasing by 0.8% compared to Q1 2025.Gross salaries and other salary rights amounted to 6,564 lei monthly per household and were the most important source of total income (69.1% of the total household income, up 0.7 percentage points compared to Q1 2025). Significant contributions to the formation of the total household income were made by the income from social benefits, with 1,844 lei monthly per household (19.4% in Q2 2025 and 20.5% in Q1 2025, respectively, of the total household income), and by the in-kind income with 574 lei monthly per household (6.0% in Q2 2025 and 6.2% in Q1 2025, respectively), which consists of the value of the in-kind income obtained by employees and beneficiaries of social benefits (1.2% in Q2 2025 and 1.1% in Q1 2025, respectively) and the value in lei of the food and non-food products consumed from own resources (4.8% in Q2 2025 and 5.1% in Q1 2025, respectively).As regards the area of residence, the level of the total monthly average income per household in Q2 2025 was 11,091 lei in the urban area, 1.4 times more than in the rural area, and the income per person was 4,572 lei, 1.5 times more than in the rural area. In terms of the structure of the total income, in Q2 2025, in the urban area, the share of gross salaries and other salary rights in the total income was 75.2%, i.e. 15.7 percentage points more than in the rural area, while, in the rural area, the income from social benefits accounted for 22.4%, higher by 4.9 percentage points than in the urban area.According to the INS, the share of the in-kind income was 10.1% in rural area, i.e. 3.0 times greater than in the urban area.In Q2 of 2025, the monthly average monetary expenditure stood at 7,580 lei per household (3,051 lei per person), 5.3% higher than in Q1 of 2025.The equivalent value of the consumption of food and non-food products from own resources, on average, stood at 463 lei monthly per household (186 lei per person) in Q2 2025, declining by 1.0% compared to Q1 of 2025.In Q2 of 2025, the main purposes of the expenditure incurred by households are consumption (monetary consumption expenditure and the equivalent value of the human consumption from own resources), with 4,779 lei monthly per household (59.4%) and the transfers to public and private administration and to social insurance budgets in the form of taxes, contributions, dues, fees with 2,734 lei per household (34.0%). Expenses related to household production (monetary production expenditure and the equivalent value of the fodder-related consumption from own resources) stood at 185 lei per household (2.3%), in Q2 of 2025.Depending on the area of residence, the INS mentioned that there are differences in the level of the total monthly average expenditure. In the urban area, the monthly average expenditure per household was 9,383 lei, i.e. 1.4 times higher than in the rural area. Thus, one person from the urban area spent, on average, 3,868 lei monthly, namely 1.5 times more than one person from the rural area.In terms of the structure of the total expenditure, in the urban area, the share of the expenditure on taxes, contributions, dues and fees in the total expenditure was 37.1%, i.e. 8.1 percentage points more than in the rural area, while, in the rural area, the share of the equivalent value of the consumption of food and non-food products from own resources in the total expenditure was 10.6%, i.e. 3.9 times higher than in the urban area.According to the standard Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose (COICOP), food and non-alcoholic beverages, amounting to 1,592 lei per household, had a significant share in the total consumption expenditure of households (33.3%). These are followed, in terms of size, by the monthly cost of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, amounting to 657 lei per household, with a share of 13.7% in the total monthly average consumption expenditure, by the expenditure on clothing and footwear, amounting to 391 lei per household, with a share of 8.2% in the total monthly average consumption expenditure and by the expenditure on transport, amounting to 337 lei per household with a share of 7.1% in the total monthly average consumption expenditure.The lowest level of monthly average household expenditure was recorded for education, amounting only 31 lei per household (0.7% of the total monthly average consumption expenditure).
