Romania - India Joint Economic Commission reactivated after eight years

November 4, 2025

Minister of Foreign Affairs Oana Toiu announced on Monday that the Romania - India Joint Economic Commission has been reactivated, referencing her meeting in Bucharest with Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada, who came accompanied by a business delegation."I welcomed today, at the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry the Indian official who is currently in Romania to co-chair, together with Minister Radu Miruta, the Romania-India Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation. We are making sure that we stop the decrease in the volume of trade relations, last year it dropped from 1.7 billion USD in 2023 to just 1 billion. Especially since we have an Economy minister focused also on foreign relation partnerships, and this with visible results," the Romanian top diplomat wrote on Facebook.Toiu also brought to mind that an EU delegation is continuing negotiations in India for the Free Trade Agreement. "But I don't think we should wait for EU decisions in order to pursue our own interests, in alignment with the shared ones," she added."We cannot afford to wait to boost economic relations and joint investments, we all win when bilateral dialogue advances. Both the visit and the discussions with the Indian official show the common interest in boosting trade between the two countries and expanding cooperation and investments in renewable energy, advanced technologies, IT&C and connectivity," the minister stressed. She added that she discussed with the senior Indian official the importance of the Constanta port as a Black Sea hub and transit point for Indian products, especially in light of the imminent signing of the EU-India Free Trade Agreement, but also about Romania's concerns regarding Russia's financing through its links to the global economy through energy contacts."Our desire is to increase economic exchanges with India, the fourth global economy, as well as cultural and personal ties with the country with the largest population in the world," Toiu concluded.  (Photo:https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=1396448708508328&set=pcb.1396448758508323)
