Primary energy production falls 3.9pct in 2024; imports of energy resource rise 6.2pct

Primary energy production fell last year by 3.9 percent compared with 2023, totalling 21.07 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), while imports of energy resources increased by 6.2 percent, reaching 16.45 million toe, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data published on Monday.Total energy resources available last year amounted to 42 million toe, a level comparable with 2023, maintained through the 6.2 percent rise in imports and the decrease in primary energy production and energy resource stocks at the beginning of the year.More substantial decreases in resources were recorded for imported coke (-20.3 percent), coal (-12.6 percent), hydroelectric, wind, solar photovoltaic and nuclear heat energy (-7.9 percent). Crude oil resources increased by 5.8 percent.In 2024, primary energy production (21.07 million toe) decreased by 848,000 toe compared with 2023, amid declines in electricity production from renewable sources, coal and crude oil. Usable natural gas production increased by 61,000 toe (+0.8 percent).Imports of energy products increased in 2024 by 6.2 percent compared with 2023, driven by a rise in crude oil imports (+12.1 percent). Decreases were recorded for coal and coke (-16 percent), usable natural gas (-13.9 percent) and petroleum products (-1.2 percent).In 2024, final energy consumption across the economy increased by 92,000 toe (+0.4 percent) compared with 2023. Increases were recorded in transport (+2.8 percent) and industry (+1.5 percent). Declines registered in other sectors of the economy (-2.9 percent), agriculture and forestry (-2.6 percent) and household consumption (-1.6 percent).Within total final energy consumption, transport accounts for the largest share (34.5 percent), followed by household consumption (31.8 percent) and industrial consumption (21.5 percent).In 2024, energy exports (including bunkering) amounted to 7.5 million toe, up 298,000 toe (+4.1 percent) compared with 2023.Gross domestic energy consumption per capita in 2024 stood at 1,598 kg of oil equivalent, increasing by 0.4 percent compared with 2023.
