Romania's negative natural growth extends into September 2025

The natural population change in Romania stayed negative in September 2025, at minus 4,213, with the number of deaths being 1.3 times higher than that of live births, according to data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).In September 2025 as against September 2024, the number of birth certificates for live births was higher by 1,328 (+10%) while the number of death certificates increased by 424 (+2.3%), and for children under the age of one who died was 23 lower.Overall, the natural growth was negative both in September 2025 (-4,213 people) and in September 2024 (-5,117 people).The number of deaths recorded in September 2025 was 9,553 in urban areas (5,047 men and 4,506 women), and 9,280 in rural areas (4,884 men and 4,396 women).Year-over-year, the number of registered deaths increased by +2.5% in urban areas (+4% in the case of men and +0.8% in the case of women) and by +2.1% in rural areas (+0.8% in men and +3.6% in women).In September 2025, 14,620 birth certificates were issued, up 675 (+4.8%) from August 2025.The number of September 2025 death certificates was 18,833 (9,931 for men and 8,902 for women), up 1,278 deaths from August 2025, which is an increase of 7.3% (+8.3% men and +6.1% women). The number of death certificates for children under the age of one in September 2025 was 63, down six from August 2025.In September 2025, 41.3% (7,781 deaths) of the total number of deaths were in people aged 80 and over, 27.9% (5,251 deaths) in people aged 70-79 and 16.1%, or 3,031 deaths, in people aged 60-69. On the other hand, the fewest deaths were recorded in the age classes 0-4 years (78 deaths), 5-19 years (51 deaths) and 20-29 years (93 deaths).In September 2025, 11,810 marriages were recorded and 2,565 final divorces.
