MApN announces signing of contract for acquisition of HISAR-class light corvette from Government of Turkey

 The Ministry of National Defence (MApN) announced on Wednesday that the contract for the acquisition of a HISAR-class light corvette from the Government of Turkey, worth over 220 million euros excluding VAT, has been signed.According to a press release from MApN, the signing ceremony of the intergovernmental contract for the corvette took place on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Ministry of National Defence."The entry of a new vessel into the Naval Forces service is a concrete step, a step that strengthens our defence capability in the Black Sea. We are not just talking about military equipment, but about Romania's security and respect for our servicemen who need the best conditions to carry out their missions," said the acting Minister of Defence, Radu Miruta, quoted in the statement.The total acquisition price, according to the contract, is 223 million euros excluding VAT and covers, in addition to the cost of the vessel, personnel training and a package of logistical support.The contract was signed by Brigadier General Dr Eng Ion-Cornel Plesa, Head of the General Directorate for Armaments at MApN, and by Mustafa Ilbas, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Military Factory and Shipyard Management Inc. (ASFAT) from the Turkish Ministry of National Defence.Present at the ceremony were Minister Radu Miruta and the Turkish Deputy Minister of Defence, Musa Heybet.The Turkish delegation also included Ozgur Kivanc Altan, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Bucharest.Also attending the ceremony were General Gheorghita Vlad, Chief of the General Staff of Defence, and Vice Admiral Mihai Panait, Chief of the Naval Forces General Staff."The Supreme Defence Council approved, in March 2025, the multiannual programme for equipping the Romanian Naval Forces with a new HISAR-class light corvette, in order for the Ministry of National Defence to initiate the necessary steps for the acquisition, and the joint Defence Committees of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies unanimously granted their approval for this acquisition on 8 September," MApN recalled in the release.The HISAR-class corvette is part of the Romanian Naval Forces' procurement programme, which aims to provide capabilities for protecting critical maritime infrastructure, patrolling, as well as combat missions.
