Gov't debt rises to 1,084.25 billion lei or 59.7% of GDP in August

 Public administration debt (government debt) rose in August 2025 to 1,084.25 billion lei, up from 1,070.18 billion lei in the previous month, according to data published by the Ministry of Finance (MF).As a percentage of GDP, government debt increased to 59.7%, from 58.9% in July (GDP according to the INS release of 10 October 2025).In August 2025, medium and long-term debt rose to 1,021.5 billion lei, from 1,004.9 billion lei in July 2025, while short-term debt fell to 63.1 billion lei, from 65.19 billion lei in the previous month.Most of this debt, namely 885.958 billion lei, consisted of government securities. Loans amounted to 175.48 billion lei.Debt in the national currency stood at 495.4 billion lei, debt in euro at the equivalent of 476.2 billion lei and debt in US dollars at the equivalent of 110.6 billion lei.According to data from the Ministry of Finance, in August the central public administration debt increased to 1,059.5 billion lei, from 1,046 billion lei in July 2025, of which 996.44 billion lei was medium and long-term debt. Most of the central administration debt was contracted in lei (476.06 billion lei) and in euro (the equivalent of 470.8 billion lei).Local public administration debt rose to 24.734 billion lei, from 24.175 billion lei in the previous month, of which 24.7 billion lei was medium and long-term debt.Also, in the eighth month of this year, public administration domestic debt amounted to 529.57 billion lei (523.11 billion lei in July 2025), or 29.2% of GDP (28.8% of GDP in the previous month), of which around 510 billion lei was central administration debt and 19.58 billion lei local administration debt.According to the same source, public administration external debt totalled 554.68 billion lei (547.06 billion lei in the previous month), or 30.6% of GDP (30.1% of GDP in July 2025), of which 549.5 billion lei was central public administration external debt and 5.155 billion lei local public administration external debt.
