Health Ministry’ s report on infections with patients with burns

December 23, 2015

The National Public Health Institute and Bucharest Public Health department make an analysis of infections with patients with burnt skin and will present a comprehensive report and plan of concrete measures, the Health ministry informs. The Public Health department gathered evidence proving air microbes and evidence attesting the presence of bacteria in hospitals. Test results will be final next week. Hospital infections represent the most frequent complications of patients with major burns. According to specialised studies 75% of patients’ deaths are associated with infectious complications and lung lesions. Infections represent just one of the multiple determining factors in the case of patients with burns. The main factor determining the death of patients wounded in the October 30 fire is that of serious lung lesions. The press release also shows that hospitals had medication and necessary therapeutic means for the adequate treatment of infections. They were ensured by the program for critical patients which had in 2015 a budget of over 200 million lei, supplemented by 23.6 million lei following requests made by hospitals which took over victims. Upon Health Ministry request, the Matei Bals National Institute for Infectious Diseases offered consultancy to all hospital and specialist physicians made microbiological tests. Three persons injured in the fire at the Colectiv club, died because of hospital infections  Three persons injured in the fire at the Colectiv club in Bucharest on October 30 who were hospitalised at the Burn Surgery Hospital of Bucharest died because of hospital infections, the hospital's spokesman, dr. Adrian Stanculea, said on Thursday. "We had 26 injured hospitalised, out of whom six passed away, and almost sure three of them died because hospital infections," the doctor said. Adrian Stanculea added that patients from the Colectiv fire also died in hospitals from abroad and mentioned that many of the injured who left the Burn Surgery Hospital took off with sterile cultures. "Many patients who left from here took off with sterile cultures. It is true that afterwards some of the cultures, before leaving, got positive. After four days, they showed that there is a contamination degree, but there is a difference between contamination and infection. What they came up with could look like a contamination, not necessarily infection," Adrian Stanculea explained. According to him, at the Burn Surgery Hospital of Bucharest there is a certain degree of hospital infection within "acceptable" limits, not necessarily comparable with the ones in the civilized countries, yet within acceptable limits. The Government plans to set in place as of next year a national program for burns patients that shall be financed from the state budget, the Government's spokesperson Dan Suciu announced on Thursday. Suciu made these specifications in connection with the requests of the physicians of the Bucharest Burn Surgery Emergency Hospital that the institution be assigned a new building; Suciu said Premier Dacian Ciolos is looking into the matter. Suciu added that currently there is "definitely" no national budget-financed program for burns patients in place. According to the Government's spokesman, the Premier received the request of the physicians of the Bucharest Burn Surgery Emergency Hospital and if the financial resources for a new hospital building exist, the issue will be seriously considered. Health Minister Patriciu Achimas Cadariu announced last week that a national program for burns patients will be carried into effect with a World Bank loan, as an integral part of the priority programs.
