President Iohannis to participate in European Council meeting and 12th Asia-Europe Meeting Summit

President Klaus Iohannis will participate over October 17-19 in the reunion of the European Council, as well as in the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit, according to a release of the Presidential Administration issued on Friday. Moreover, on the sidelines of the reunion of the European Council, President Iohannis will participate in the inclusive Euro Summit. “The topics on the European Council meeting’s agenda are related to Brexit, the migration phenomenon management, internal security and the foreign affairs of the Union,” says the release. Iohannis will reiterate Romania’s support in reaching an understanding with respect to the Brexit Agreement, as soon as possible, and he will underscore our country’s support for a disciplined and predictable process regarding the Brexit, which will later represent the foundation of the future relations, which should be as close as possible, between EU and UK. Moreover, the head of state will underscore our country’s desire to conclude an agreement to be as comprehensive as possible regarding the future relations and the identification of new collaboration modalities between the EU and UK in such priority areas as security, defence and foreign affairs, fields in which the British contribution is substantial. Regarding the migration, President Iohannis will support the need for a strengthened dialogue with the migrants’ countries of origin and transit, with emphasizes to be put on development, education and building of capabilities, specifies the Presidential Administration release. “The Romanian President will also voice our country’s support for the consolidation of the European Agency for Border Police and Coast Guard, while mentioning that Romania brought a constant substantial contribution to this agency’s activity,” says the release. In terms of domestic security, Iohannis will underscore the importance of implementing such legislative and non-legislative instruments aiming at a better cooperation and coordination at EU level. Moreover, the President will highlight the fact that preventing and countering radicalization and terrorism must remain among the priority concerns of the member states and he will reaffirm our country’s support for such approaches and efforts made at European level to strengthen Union’s resilience against hybrid threats. On October 18, President Iohannis will participate in the inclusive Euro Summit. On this occasion, the Romanian official will mention that our country supports the objective of consolidation of the Economic and Monetary Union, while carefully assessing the impact of all initiatives in this area, considering Romania’s objective to adhere as soon possible.   Moreover, on October 18 and 19, Klaus Iohannis will participate in the works of the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit. The Summit, themed “Global Partners for Global Challenges” will bring together 53 partners of ASEM, while targeting an increased commitment of partner states in Europe and Asia in approaching the complex problems in a global context facing continuous change. The main topic for the debates will be connectivity at all levels – political, economic, cultural, digital, institutional and human – in order to transmit a consolidated message of recognition of the increasing interdependencies between the two continents, reads the same release.
