Congratulatory message of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs: The relations between Romania and Turkey have grown in strength over the past 140 years based on common interests and geographic proximity, but also on cultural and historic ties

October 29, 2018

On the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Turkey, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania offers the warmest congratulations to the Turkish people along with wishes of prosperity. 2018 is also a celebratory year of our longstanding friendship, as it marks 140 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties between Romania and Turkey. The relations between Romania and Turkey have grown in strength over the past 140 years based on common interests and geographic proximity, but also on cultural and historic ties. The year 2011 was a landmark in the bilateral dialogue, with the elevation of our relation to that of Strategic Partnership. The frequency of high level contacts between the Romanian and Turkish Governments, as well as various programs of cooperation covering multiple fields, from education and culture to trade and investments between our countries highlights the substance of our partnership. Our economic ties have been on an upward trend, making the goal of reaching the level of 10 bn $ per year, as charted by our Presidents, achievable. We are also partners in the military and the security fields and we appreciate the solidity of our cooperation – bilateral, regional and allied – and the contribution of the Republic of Turkey to the peace in the region. The continuous engagement of Turkey as a valuable partner in the Black Sea is essential, not only to ensure peace and security, but also to create prosperity and economic opportunities for the people of our countries. Over the past 140 years, the strength of our relation was built on trust and confidence and our solidarity was tested in times of need. Romania will continue to support and promote Turkey’s place in the European family and favour a path towards EU integration, as we believe this would be mutually beneficial for both parties. Romania respects and values the community of Turkish origin and appreciates its economic and cultural contribution to the social fabric of our nation. They represent a model of integration and coexistence and they are an important part of the cultural mosaic that our country is proud of. At this time of celebration for the Republic of Turkey, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania is honoured to underline the friendship and close partnership that our countries enjoy and to express the wish and engagement to further consolidate our ties. Romanian  Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes all the best to the Republic of Turkey and joins in celebrating the founding of the Republic, 95 years ago.
