IntMin Carmen Dan meets in Washington the Acting US Attorney General

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Carmen Dan, had a meeting, in Washington, with the Acting United States Attorney General, Matthew Whitaker, in the context of the EU – US ministerial meeting in the context of the EU – US Justice and Home Affairs Ministerial Meeting, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) informed  on Saturday. The reunion in Washington, hosted by the Acting United States Attorney General, emphasized the landmarks of the cooperation in the security and internal affairs domain between the United States of American and the European Union, the quoted source mentions. The meeting with Matthew Whitaker is the first meeting of a Romanian official with the Acting United States Attorney General. According to the MAI, Romania participated as an observer, in the perspective of taking over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in January 2019, having as a main objective presenting the priorities in the security and internal affairs domain, one of the topics discussed being cybersecurity, namely the prevention and combating of online terrorist content and combating radicalization on the Internet. “I fully agree that, presently, the battlefield against radicalization is the virtual space, as the European Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos noted, and Romania will prioritize this domain during the presidency of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. Obviously this implies identifying a balance between procedures to block online content relating to terrorist propaganda and freedom of speech, but radicalization should not be encouraged or protected,” said, on the occasion of the reunion, the Romanian Minister of Internal Affairs, quoted in the release. The EU – US Ministerial Meeting also saw the attendance of the Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen, the EUROPOL director Catherine De Bolle, the EUROJUST President Ladislav Hamran, the Austrian Federal Minister of the Interior Herbert Kickl, the Austrian Federal Justice Minister Joseph Moser and representatives of the European Commission. The next high-level reunion EU – US in the Justice and Home Affairs domain will take place at the beginning of next year in Bucharest.
