ANP: Two new penitentiaries to be built on Council of Europe Development Bank loan

Two new penitentiaries, with a total capacity of 1,900 places, will be built in Romania based on a 177 million-euro loan approved on Monday by the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB) to strengthen the penitentiary system and improve the detention condition, the National Penitentiary Administration (ANP) announced. Thus, the CEB funds will be used to build a penitentiary with a capacity of 1,000 places in Berceni, Prahova County, and in Unguriu, Vrancea County, a prison will be erected which will be able to accommodate 900 detainees. “The loan provided by CEB represents a major contribution to governmental plans to improve the quality and capacity of penitentiary institutions, in accordance with the 2018-2024 timetable of measures for solving problems related to overcrowding and detention conditions, adopted by Memorandum by the Government of Romania.” ANP points out. In addition, CEB will support the building of facilities for prison staff, including training and professional development, in the town of Pantelimon, Ilfov County, and Rodbav, Brasov County, the ANP release says.
