President Iohannis: I have a reasonable amount of time to respond on proposals for ministers; CCR has nothing to say

November 27, 2018

President Klaus Iohannis on Monday stated that he has “a very reasonable” amount of time to respond in case of the proposals for Development and Transport ministers, underscoring that the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) has nothing to say in this matter. The head of state was asked how he sees a possible involvement of the CCR in the matter of the appointment of the two ministers. “In a way. For now, the Government made me a request and I said I will respond after December 1, if they are in such a hurry, this concerns only them, but I do have a very reasonable amount of time left to respond. Practically, the CCR has no saying here. (…) The government isn’t by any means blocked. The Government doesn’t do its job because it probably has other things more pending to deal with. The Government is complete and, I said this before, nothing stops it from doing its job,” the head of state said at the Romanian Embassy in Paris, where he met with representatives of the Romanian community. He reiterated that a decision with respect to the new ministers of Development and Transport will be made after the celebration of Romania’s National Day. “As I already said, after the celebrations dedicated to the National Day. I have no intention during these days of celebration to discuss such unpleasant topics of reshuffle and various differences of opinion between some and others,” said Iohannis. The Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Liviu Dragnea stated on Monday that at the meeting of the governing coalition to be held in the beginning of next week a decision will be made on what to do if the head of state, Klaus Iohannis, refuses to meet with its legal role in appointing some new ministers, while underscoring that Minister of Justice Tudorel Toader will put together a draft for a possible notification of the CCR related to a legal conflict of a constitutional nature.
