Iohannis calls for talks in European Council

September 30, 2021

President Klaus Iohannis called for talks in the European Council, "as soon as possible", on the rise of energy prices, the Presidential Administration reported on Thursday, after the head of state attended a meeting in video conferencing format with European Council President Charles Michel and other European leaders. The meeting was organized in preparation for the informal meeting of the European Council and the EU-Western Balkans Summit to be held on 5 and 6 October in Brdo, Slovenia. At the meeting, Klaus Iohannis drew attention to the need for a joint effort by all EU Member States to identify measures aimed primarily at protecting the population affected by rising energy prices as well as the economic environment.According to the Presidential Administration, the President stressed "the need to identify common, well-prepared European solutions, based on proposals to be made by the European Commission and the contribution of specialized ministers from the Member States of the European Union, so that the effects of energy price hikes for European citizens can be mitigated".
