The annual inflation rate in the European Union rose to 3.6% in September from 3.2% in August, with the highest member countries being Estonia and Lithuania (both with 6.4%), Poland (5.6%), Hungary (5.5%) and Romania (5.2%), show the data published on Wednesday by Eurostat. The euro area annual inflation rate was 3.4% in September 2021, up from 3.0% in August. A year earlier, the rate was -0.3%. In September, the highest contribution to the annual euro area inflation rate came from energy (+1.63 percentage points, pp), followed by services (+0.72 pp), non-energy industrial goods (+0.57 pp) and food, alcohol & tobacco (+0.44 pp).
