President Iohannis will attend, Wed-Thu, Eastern Partnerhip Summit, European Council meeting

President Klaus Iohannis will participate, Wednesday and Thursday, in the Eastern Partnership Summit and the meeting of the European Council, which will take place in Brussels, the Presidential Administration informs.The sixth summit of the Eastern Partnership will be presided by the President of the European Council. Also in attendance will be the heads of state and government of EU member-states, the leaders of the five partner states - Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borell. The summit is set to adopt a joint statement that will establish the strategic vision for the post-2020 period of the Eastern Partnership.The main subjects included on the agenda of the meeting of the European Council refer to European coordination in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, crisis situation management and resilience to them, energy prices, security and defence of the European Union, the external aspects of migration, the external relations of the Union, with emphasis placed on the situation at the EU's borders with Ukraine and Belarus and the preparation for the European Union - African Union Summit in February 2022.On Monday, President Klaus Iohanis participated in a meeting in videoconference format with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the Prime Ministers of Slovenia - Janez Jansa, Estonia - Kaja Kallas, and Latvia - Krisjanis Karins, in preparation of the two meetings.The Presidential Administration informed that during his intervention, President Iohannis stated his option for the continuation of close coordination of EU member-states, based on scientific data, including in what regards the new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The head of state has emphasized the progress made in adapting vaccines and the rapid access of member-states to them.In what regards the significant increase of energy prices in the recent period, Iohannis emphasized the necessity for this subject to remain a priority on the agenda of European institutions and stated his option for a careful analysis on the functioning of the internal energy market, so that distortions of it be avoided. The head of state also recalled the necessity to find solutions to protect vulnerable consumers and emphasized the importance of correlating this discussion with the EU's objectives in what regards climate change."The President of Romania reiterated our country's support for nuclear energy and natural gas, as options for an accessible energy transition, including in the context of preparing new legislative proposals of the European Commission," showed the Presidential Administration.The head of state has emphasized, referring to security and defence, the idea of consolidating the role of the European Union in the domain, in close cooperation and complementarity with NATO, through the consolidation of the transatlantic relation. In this context, President Iohannis evoked the recent conversation had with the US President, Joe Biden, in the B9 format and emphasized the importance of coordination and unity both within EU, as well as within NATO, with regards to the actions of Russian in the Eastern Vicinity.During discussions relating to the preparations of the Eastern Partnership Summit, President Klaus Iohannis emphasized that it is necessary for the European Union to have a high level of ambition raised through the joint statement that is to be adopted on this occasion, which will contain a strategic vision for the post-2020 period of the Eastern Partnership.At the same time, the head of state reiterated the necessity that the European Union support partners who desire so and are firmly committed to the path of reforms, such as the Republic of Moldova, the leadership of which is oriented towards reform and a powerful European commitment.
