INFLATION AND THE EVOLUTION OF CONSUMER PRICES: DECEMBER 2021

1. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) – indicator for determining inflation at national level   - Consumer prices were up 0.7% in December 2021 from November 2021. - The annual inflation rate in December 2021 compared to December 2020 is 8.2%. - The average consumer price rate over the last 12 months (January 2021-December 2021) as compared to the previous 12 months (January 2020-December 2020) is 5.1%.   2. The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) – indicator for determining inflation at the level of EU Member States   -  The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices in December 2021 compared to November 2021 is 100.51%. - The HICP-based annual inflation rate in December 2021 compared to December 2020 is 6.7%. - The HICP-based average consumer price rate over the last 12 months (January 2021-December 2021) as compared to the previous 12 months (January 2020-December 2020) is 4.1%.   Out of the food products, the ones that increased the price the most were: eatable oil by 27.17% in December 2021 over December 2020 (and by 1.36% against November 2021), oil, bacon, fats, by 24.82% in December 2021 against December 2020 (and by 1.34% against November 2021) as well as potatoes by 24.89% in December 2021 against December 2020, and by 4.42% against November 2021.   For this category, the only products which got cheaper were citrus fruits and Mediterranean fruit which got cheaper by 3.1% in December 2021 against November 2021.   Similarly, for non-food products, most expensive have become natural gas by 51.57% in December 2021 against December 2020 and by 1.44% against November 2021. Electricity, gas and central heating got more expensive by 28.10% in December 2021 against December 2020 and by 3.91% against November 2021. Fuel got more expensive by 22.45% in December 2021 against December 2020 and got cheaper by 0, 78% against November 2021.   As for services, in December 2021 against December 2020 postal services got most expensive by 22.5% and by 16.08% against November 2021. Air transport got cheaper by 6.38% in December 2021 against December 2020 but it got more expensive by 19.79% against November 2021.
