JusMin Predoiu, Canadian ambassador discuss updating bilateral judicial framework

Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu met on Tuesday with Canadian ambassador to Romania Annick Goulet at the diplomat's request, with the two discussing the modernization of the current bilateral legal framework governing the two states' judicial cooperation, the Justice Ministry said in a statement.The two officials examined the optimal solutions to improve bilateral judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters, with emphasis on the signing of a new extradition treaty.Specifically, JusMin Catalin Predoiu proposed the Canadian side the start of talks for the conclusion of a new and modern extradition treaty, in line with recent developments in Romania's criminal law, as well as with the expected amendments to the Criminal Codes, the more so as the previous treaty dates from 1895.Following the meeting, the sides decided for bilateral dialogue to continue at the level of experts in the field of criminal judicial cooperation and for the identification of the best ways to resolve issues of common interest, the Justice Ministry said.Simona Franguloiu, deputy director of the Justice Ministry's International Law and Judicial Cooperation Department attended on behalf of the Ministry, while political counselor Ian Trites participated on behalf of the Canadian Embassy.   (Photo:https://www.just.ro/)
