Coal output up by 17.5 pct in first 11 months of 2021, imports up by 9.6 pct

Romania's net coal production totaled 2.958 million tons of oil equivalent (toe) in the first 11 months of 2021, up 17.5 pct (440,800 toe) form the same period of 2020, according to data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).During the mentioned period, Romania imported 440,600 toe of net coal, by 38,700 toe (9.6 pct) more y-o-y.The National Commission for Strategy and Forecast (CNSP) estimated a coal production of 3.020 million toe for 2021, up 9.9 pct from 2020, and imports of 370,000 toe, down 12.1 pct. For 2022, CNSP forecasts a production of 2.935 million toe, down 2.8 pct, and imports of 270,000 toe, down 27 pct.According to the National Energy Strategy, total coal output will decrease from 32 TWh in 2030 to 12 TWh in 2050, in a trend to reduce the share of coal in the energy mix (45 TWh, in 2020).For 2030, the results of Optimum Scenario modeling show that energy derived from coal will decrease slightly to 15.8 TWh, accounting for 20.6 percent of the energy mix.
