Minister Bogdan Aurescu to co-chair "Black Sea Security Summit" round table on Friday

July 21, 2022

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, will co-chair, on Friday, the round table "Black Sea Security Summit", organized by the US Congress' Commission for Security and Cooperation in Europe, informs a press release. The head of Romanian diplomacy will lead, together with the American senator Roger Wicker, member of the US Congress, the round table, an event organized for the first time in Romania, which "represents the first multilateral dialogue in this formula, between regional allies and partners, on security in the Black Sea region".The event will be attended by Minister Bogdan Aurescu and representatives of the Helsinki Commission, senior government officials from Romania and the countries in the region, as well as other key partners, including NATO.The initiative of the Helsinki Commission to organize the "Black Sea Security Summit" round table comes in the context of the significant deterioration of the security situation in the Black Sea region, as a result of the military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. The aim of the Helsinki Commission is to draw attention to the worrying developments in the region, with a significant negative impact, on multiple levels, for the entire international community. The theme of the meeting will be the response of the international community to the illegal and unjustified war waged by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the importance of the Black Sea for Euro-Atlantic security as a whole.According to the Foreign Ministry (MAE), Minister Aurescu will emphasize, in his speech, the results of the NATO Summit in Madrid and their impact on the Black Sea region and the importance of strengthening NATO's position of deterrence and defense on the Eastern Flank. It will also welcome the increased attention paid to the Black Sea region, which is stated in the New Strategic Concept as a region of strategic importance to NATO, thus adequately reflecting its relevance to the North Atlantic Alliance."Selecting Romania to host this meeting is a reconfirmation of the active role that our country and Romanian diplomacy have in shaping the Euro-Atlantic community's response to the challenges in the context created by the Russian aggression against Ukraine," the MAE informed.
