National Corporation Nuclearelectrica S.A. and nuclear and isotope technology company Laurentis Energy Partners - a commercial subsidiary of Canada's Ontario Power Generation, signed on Thursday in Paris a memorandum for the production of medical isotopes at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant and for exploring the development of heavy water production in Romania, the Energy Ministry informs."It is a significant step to help improve the health of millions of people and demonstrate the multiple benefits of nuclear power plants, which generate clean energy, contribute to energy stability, decarbonization and economic growth, and support cancer treatment. Equally important is the project to resume heavy water production in Romania, an initiative begun during the term of former minister Virgil Popescu. The global demand for heavy water experiences a spectacular increase, and Romania can be a strategic player," said Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja, according to the cited statement.This step comes shortly after the announcement about the Government of Canada providing funding to support the construction of Cernavoda reactors 3 and 4.The memorandum was concluded against the backdrop of the over 55-year Romania - Canada partnership in the field of nuclear energy and of the announcement made by Canadian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson about a 3 billion Canadian dollar deal to support the development of Cernavoda Units 3 and 4, which strengthens energy security and furthers the production of clean energy.The agreement was formalized on Thursday, with OPG president and CEO Ken Hartwick, and Nuclearelectrica CEO Cosmin Ghita signing a Memorandum of Understanding, in the presence of the Romanian Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja. The signing took place on the sidelines of the Roadmap To New Nuclear conference organized in Paris by the Nuclear Energy Agency, which sees the participation of over 21 international ministers and hundreds of industry professionals.
