October 16, 2023

The Austrian minister for European Affairs, Karoline Edtstadler (the People’s Party, OVP) reiterated on Friday Austria’s worries connected to an extension of the Schengen area, after the government in Bucharest threatened to sue Viena if they do not give up their veto as regards Romania’s accession to Schengen, says the Austrian agency APA.‘The Austrian veto as regards Schengen is not directed against Romania, but against a system which does not function anymore’ said on Friday Karoline Edtstadler, when answering a request on the part of APA.The Austrian minister showed understanding for Bucharest’s position’ We respect the position and we understand the interests of our Romanian partners. At the same time, we cannot close our eyes and extend a system which is already faulty’ she said. The European Union should 'do its homework and make EU border protection work. Only secure borders on the outside make our vision of a borderless Europe on the inside possible', Edtstadler added.   As regards the Austrian minister of internal affairs, Gerhard Karner (OVP) reacted showing the increasing number of migrants to Europe:’ At such a moment, it seems senseless to talk about the extension of the Schengen area. We need more not less control’ he said.
