Three French Air and Space Force Rafale multirole aircraft, in Romania on training missions

November 15, 2023

A detachment of the French Air and Space Force, composed of about 40 servicemen and three Rafale multirole aircraft, arrived on Monday at the 86th "Locotenent aviator Gheorghe Mociornita" Air Base, in Borcea, to carry out joint training missions with military and F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft of the Romanian Air Force."The joint training missions contribute to increasing the rapid reaction and deterrence capability, as well as to strengthening the interoperability between the Romanian Air Force and the French Air and Space Forces," the Ministry of Interior Affairs (MAI) informed on Monday. These aircraft are stationed at Fetesti Air Base and perform their mission with a reduced logistical footprint and only about 20 pilots. They are carrying out a reassurance mission on NATO's eastern flank.Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine on 24 February 2022, the French Air and Space Force has been participating in the NATO Eastern Flank Air Policing Mission called "Air Shielding."This engagement, usually conducted from the aircraft's home air bases, has also been implemented through easy point to point deployments called "MORANE" in Eastern and Northern European countries."In this context and for the first time, the French Air and Space Force deploys Rafale fighter aircraft in Romania for several days to carry out missions within NATO," reads a press release the French Embassy in Romania sent on Monday. This mission format, a French variant of the NATO concept known as 'Agile Combat Employment (ACE),' consists of a logistically easier deployment due to an increased interoperability of the partner air force's support equipment. In this logic of optimising resources, French pilots work in collaboration with their colleagues from other countries, using procedures common to NATO member countries.
