Security breaches caused by ransomware attacks have grown by 79% this year

The number of incidents caused by ransomware attacks have grown by 79% in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to an international stody to be presented at the 13th edition of DefCamp, organized over 23-24 November.   “The evolution of the economic and geopolitical situation brings new challenges for cyber security, hackers facing a significant increase of cyber threats.In 2020, 20% of attacks were ransomware type, acocrding to an international study and affected a quarter of companies. In 2023, the number of data breaches caused by ransomware type attacks made public went up by 79%.   Historically speaking, fraud attempts grow in recession periods, attackers can adapt to the market, reducing prices of hacking instruments and making cyber crime even more accessible. For instance, following the 2008-2009 recession cyber attacks have grown by 40%, according tod organizers of the conference in a press release issued on Thursday.   In this context, this year's edition of DefCamp is offering the framework for talks about the most frequent types of cyber attacks in 2023, cryptographic log-in, new defense methods, the use of automatic defense operations or vulnerabilities of cloud technologies, a.o.   DefCamp 2023 is organized by the Research Center for Cyber Security Association of Romania (CCSIR) and supported by Bit Sentinel, Booking Holdings and Keysight Technologies Romania.   Since 2011, DefCamp succeded in attracting about 11,000 participants from 55 countries and 150 cities.   This year, over 200 teams have already subscribed to the DefCamp Capture the Flag competition, one of the biggest initiatives of the kind in Central and Eastern Europe.
