Romania Economic Survey 2024, key element for Romania's accession to OECD

February 15, 2024

Romania was invited to participate in the 1,423rd meeting of the Economic and Development Review Committee (EDRC) on Romania Economic Survey 2024, which took place in a hybrid format in Paris, with Romania's delegation being led by Secretary General of the Romanian Government Mircea Abrudan.According to a press statement released on Wednesday, the meeting took place on Tuesday as part of the steps taken by Romania for its accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).The Romanian delegation included officials of institutions and authorities involved in the in-depth analysis of the fields included in the survey: the National Economic Strategy and Forecast Board (CNSP), the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of the Environment, Water and Forestry, the National Bank of Romania and the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. At the same time, more than 100 officials from ministries, institutions and central authorities involved in the survey attended online to present Romania's position before representatives of the 38 member states of the Economic and Development Review Committee."The national OECD accession coordination team with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the General Secretariat of the Government (SGG), together with the National Economicc Strategy and Forecasting Board, under the authority of SGG, took care of data collection nationwide in Romania for carrying out the survey. Thus, during the meeting in Paris on January 16, in the section specifically dedicated to Romania, each chapter of the survey and progress from the previous study, published in 2022, was discussed in business areas relevant to the OECD accession process.""Romania Economic Survey 2024 is a key element in the OECD accession process, objectively reflecting the progress made in the last two years and the gradual alignment with the OECD standards established for the world's elite economies. The final version of the survey, as resulting from yesterday's discussions in Paris, will contain a realistic presentation of the current economic state of Romania, and the institutions and public authorities involved in the study will be tasked with implementing the final recommendations," Abrudan is quoted as saying in the statement.National Coordinator for Romania's Accession to the OECD Luca Niculescu said that, "as a candidate state for accession to the OECD, Romania is currently fully involved in a national effort to self-assess the fulfillment of the conditions and standards necessary for the process of accession."The OECD economic survey is carried out for all member states once every two years and represents a report on a series of standard technical indicators of the highly performing economies.Romania became a candidate country in January 2022. Currently, Romania is in the technical stage of the evaluation process, which consists in the transmission of additional information, thematic missions and reports on 26 essential OECD sectoral committees for this process.
