Romania - Iran trade, down 34.7pct 11 months into 2023

February 21, 2024

Romanian companies strictly comply with the restrictive measures imposed by the European Union on the member countries' trade with Iran, which has significantly reduced the range of products that can be subject to mutual exchanges, Chairman of the Bucharest Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIB) Iuliu Stocklosa said on Monday. In the first 11 months of 2023, the total value of trade between Romania and Iran was standing at USD 205.5 million, down 34.7% y-o-y, of which USD 146 million (-35.2%) worth of Romanian exports and USD 59.5 million (-33.6%) worth of imports from Iran.Iran ambassador to Romania Seyed Hossein Sadat Meidani paid a working visit to CCIB accompanied by Iran's commercial attaché Mohammad Hossein Ahmadzadegan.Romanian statistics reveal that after a record year 2021, there was an important cut in trade in 2022, a trend that was maintained in the first 11 months of 2023, according to the available data.Topping the Romanian exports is corn (93.4% of deliveries) and fresh sheep meat, with a share of 3.6%. The rest of the delivered products are quantitatively insignificant, each holding a share of less than 1%.The ambassador said that there is an untapped business potential at the SME level, with products that are not subject to restrictions and that could be identified through dialogue with the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Mining under a co-operation agreement with CCIB of October 2, 2015, ensuring the full support of the Iranian Embassy for the resumption of contacts at the level of the chambers of commerce in the capitals of the two countries.
