Întrevederea premierului Marcel Ciolacu cu doamna Jennifer Granholm, secretar pentru energie al Statelor Unite ale Americii

December 4, 2023

PRESS RELEASE
Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu: Cooperation with the United States turned energy security into one of our Strategic Partnership's main pillars

Energy security remains a strategic priority for Romania, stated Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu during yesterday's meeting with the U.S. Secretary of Energy, Jennifer Granholm, in Washington DC.
- Cooperation with the United States in this area turned energy security into one of the main pillars of our Strategic Partnership. The Romanian Government firmly supports the implementation of ongoing energy projects. Our countrys objective is to be energy-independent and to provide the necessary resources to citizens and the economy, irrespective of international developments stated Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu.
Regarding energy cooperation, the Head of the Executive mentioned that the Projects for Units 3 and 4 of Cernavoda NPP and that of the Doicesti SMR Power Plant remain a priority, taking into account the goals assumed by Romania in the climate change area.
The U.S. Secretary of Energy, Jennifer Granholm emphasized the interest of the American side in cooperation in this area, especially in renewable energy. In the talks, the emphasis was placed on nuclear energy cooperation, a distinct point of the U.S. interest, which is involved in the implementation of the Cernavoda Project, including through Eximbank financing of up to USD 3.05 billion.
Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu welcomed the U.S. interest in developing joint energy projects, an essential component of bilateral economic cooperation. The increase in bilateral trade exceeded USD 5 billion in 2022 and is to set a new record this year. Together with joint investment projects and the mutual interest to enhance collaboration in sectors that bring added value, such as research, development, and innovation, these are defining arguments to elevate our Strategic Partnership to a real economic partnership, stated Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu. Prime Minister of Romania is paying a working visit to the United States - in Washington, D. C., and New York - along with a government delegation that includes Minister of Defence Angel Tilvăr, Minister of Foreign Affairs Luminita Odobescu, and Radu Oprea, Minister of Economy.
